Hemp is Hip and not Just for Hippies

by

Hemp is a renewable resource that bugs don’t like to eat so chemicals aren’t necessary and it can be grown organically. Hemp also naturally resists mold and bacteria and puts nutrients back into the soil instead of taking them away.

Because hemp is such a fast growing and tough plant it helps choke out other weeds and can withstand severe weather like drought and floods better than other crops.

Woody Harrelson in Toronto: Wire ImageWoody Harrelson, actor, environmental activist and strict vegetarian actively promotes hemp. He previously protested Kentucky’s law, which doesn’t distinguish industrial hemp from the marijuana that makes people high.

  • Woody’s shown here signing his Book “A Guide To Simple Organic Living With Woody Harrelson and Friends” - September 13, 2005

Hemp is used in the manufacturing of clothing, rope, paper, plastics, car parts and more.

Paper:

Green Field Paper Company creates environmentally friendly paper. They recycle paper, cotton and use hemp. They make all their products without cutting any trees. Green Field Paper Company’s handmade plantable seed paper is a wonderful idea. Instead of throwing your cards out, you plant them and they’re biodegradable so break down in the soil.

Car Parts:

Ford is in the process of creating a car with hemp-based parts. A plastic hemp car was actually created back in 1941 as shown in this video.

Clothing:

Hemp QueenTo see a directory of hemp based clothing and accessories, check out the Happy Hippie. One of my favorites is the Hemp Queen. Kristen Davis combines her artistic talent with sustainability. I think it’s awesome that Kristen uses her love of crafts and sewing to create beautiful hemp clothing.

She designs all her own clothing out of hemp, making each piece unique. Besides using hemp clothing, she also recycles clothes made out of other materials to decorate her one of a kind creations. She feels it’s important to push for the legalization of hemp farming. It’s important for our environment and our economy. If we all supported hemp products both would improve.
